Companies look to hire experienced talent

MUMBAI: Cutting back on hiring entry- and junior-level staff, Indian companies are increasingly looking to hire experienced professionals who would hit the ground running from day one, says a report by a recruitment firm shared exclusively with TOI. Overall, it found an improvement in business sentiment, predicting that net business outlook will improve by 3% in the next six months.


The half-yearly report forecasting hiring trends from October 2013 to March 2014 said engineering as a function remains in demand, especially for the talent coming from tier II and tier III cities like Allahabad, Bareilly, Ludhiana, Ranchi and Warangal. Businesses which are sensitive to the political-economic fallout of the impending general elections are the ones that are most likely to go slow on hiring. The bright spots on the jobs chart are the consumer goods, retail, pharma and healthcare sectors, which are expected to register increased hiring over the next six months.

"The FMCG industry is not witnessing any slowdown in hiring. Despite the tough macro-economic conditions, we are among the few sectors that have been reporting good growth quarter-on-quarter. So, hiring continues at our organization. As we expand our rural footprint, we are constantly adding numbers in the rural markets," said HR V Krishnan, executive VP at Dabur. The maker of Vatika hair oil and Real juices added around 1,000 employees for its rural expansion over the past one year.

Dream job in Lucknow

On a warm September afternoon, a group of girls huddled round a table in an open air eatery.
Between coffee sips, Christopher Turillo, 34, a trainer from the United States, taught them how to make a bridge using newspapers, strong enough to support bricks.
Ordinarily, this leadership and team-building exercise can be seen in any skill development institute.

But here, a special classroom was at work at the canteen of Avadh Girls’ Degree College (AGDC) on Vikramaditya Marg.
Christopher, an MBA and MA from the US and his friend Byomkesh Mishra, a former bank employee have been working on improving the employability skills among graduation students of this college for a year now.
The idea is to promote job-readiness among them, particularly for those coming from non-privileged backgrounds.
The exercise is part of the project ‘Medha’ which is an Indian-American social setup based in Lucknow.
It is a partner of the National Skills Development Cor poration (NSDC).
Basically, it aims to bridge the gap between the skills demanded by industry and those imparted by the education system.
“It is based entirely on experiential and activity learning techniques and includes a onemonth internship component. Its curriculum has been developed in conjunction with leading employers and is tailored to meet their needs across sectors and industries,” said Christopher.
Currently, the programme is underway in Maharaja Bijli Pasi Government Degree College, apart from AGDC.
The graduation students of this prestigious government-aided college always get involved in extracurricular activities, but here the one-month programme is not just a fun way to spend an afternoon.
It’s a crucial source of skills which the students say, could be their ticket to a dream job after graduation or a higher degree.
Priyanka, a final year arts student who is part of the programme, was always oriented towards a government job.
“I originally got involved because I thought it would be fun, but being part of it has given me so much,” she says. “I’m more confident now and do not mind doing a private job.”
The training that includes on campus classes and outstation tours to high-end hotels and showrooms in Lucknow is the buzzword, both at AGDC and Bijli Pasi College in Aashiana.
Christopher admits that more efforts are needed to train students in the Aashiana college as most of them come from comparatively humble backgrounds.
Tackling the general inclination towards hard-to-get government jobs, students work on ways to boost their chances of finding employment in the private sector.
Toward this end, the programme offers an employability education programme to students studying in public sector colleges, provided on-campus and at a subsidised fee.
“We believe that employability as a process should be incorporated into the education system itself, reducing the need for students to go beyond the gates of their institution to acquire the skills required for gainful employment,” said Christopher, who is an MBA from University of Chicago and MA (International Relations) from John Hopkins University in the US.
Depending on the response, the duo would replicate the programme in other colleges of the city.

MUMBAI: Finally, some good news for job seekers in a down-in-the-dumps market. The latest Manpower Employment Outlook Survey of 5059 employers across India released today by the ManpowerGroup reveals that Indian employers report positive hiring plans for Quarter 4, 2013.
According to the survey findings, Indian employers expect the hiring pace for the upcoming quarter to rebound from both last quarter and a year ago at this time in all industry sectors and regions.

Once the data is adjusted to allow for seasonal variation, employers report an outlook of +41% indicating a vigorous hiring pace in the months ahead. Quarter-over-quarter, employers report stronger hiring prospects in all four regions with an outlook improvement of 14 percentage points when compared with the previous quarter.
Year-over-year, the outlook is 22 percentage points stronger. India’s fourth-quarter hiring plans are the most optimistic across the globe, and represent a significant turnaround in employer confidence following four consecutive quarters of relatively lacklustre forecasts.
“Employers expect robust hiring plans in all seven industry sectors and all four regions during Quarter 4. In the coming quarter, the situation looks more promising with the recovery made by IT firms and allied companies. There is a big opportunity for the e-commerce sectors to add more jobs to the labour market,” said AG Rao, group managing director of ManpowerGroup India in a release.
The most optimistic hiring plans are reported by employers in the wholesale & retail trade sector and the services sector, where net employment outlooks stand at +46% and +45%, respectively. Employers in the northern region are most optimistic, where the net employment outlook stands at +52%.
Positive hiring intentions are reported by mining & construction sector employers with an outlook of +43% and in both the finance, insurance & real estate sector and the manufacturing sector where employers report outlooks of +42%. On the regional front, employers in the South report an outlook of +44%, while the West and the East have outlooks of +36% and +33% respectively.
Outlook for the North improves by 31 percentage points and an increase of 20 percentage points is reported in the West. Hiring plans strengthen by 14 and 9 percentage points in the South and the East, respectively. Hiring intentions also improve in all four regions when compared with 4Q 2012.
Outlook increases of 27 percentage points are reported in both the North and the East. Hiring prospects are 26 percentage points stronger in the South and improve by 13 percentage points in the West. Globally, labour market conditions are expected to remain mostly positive with employers in 29 of the 42 countries and territories reporting that they plan to boost payrolls by varying degrees during the fourth quarter.

A batch of 534 colleague-students will join ‘creative advertising’ class conducted by Nand Kumar, consultant, industry solutions group, retail CPG and logistics, at Infosys. “My colleagues will learn about some of the marketing disasters, the need of creativity and best practices in techniques of creative visual advertising. People from different countries will join in too. I have specialized in ‘marketing advertising’ and always wanted to share with my colleagues some tips I learnt during MBA degree,” said Nand. Rashmi Kashyap, manager, information security at Infosys, will take up the ladle and not laptop for a change.

 “Cooking has been my passion. It’s just a mental block that keeps people away from it. Since many employees are youngsters and away from home, I will share bachelor recipes. I will also look at various festival recipes, the Ganesh festival to start with,”

she said.The employees will also have a session on ‘arts and science of mobile app development’ by Anubhav Pradhan, principal, education and research. “It will be useful in understanding the mobile business pattern and the problems one faces in mobile app development. Around 600 employees have registered for the session,” said the Infoscion.
